⛳️ Mudballs at the PGA Championship
Happy Friday. Phil Mickelson delivered a perfectly on-brand response to the NAIA's apology for an impossibly unfair pin placement at their Women's Golf National Championship. College golfers were filmed helplessly watching putts roll completely off greens Tuesday, prompting officials to apologize after multiple players carded 10s on a single hole. Mickelson, ever the strategist, suggested players should have employed his infamous 2018 US Open tactic of "hitting a moving ball and taking the penalty"—referencing his controversial moment at Shinnecock Hills when he chased and swatted his still-rolling putt. ⬇️
Nice job! @NAIA This is the naia women’s golf national championship. No different than NCAA D3 national championship that had a round canceled. @acaseofthegolf1@NCAA

A remarkable sequence on Hole 13, where Phil Mickelson was assessed a two-stroke penalty for hitting a moving ball and ended up making a 10 on the hole.

📰 GOLF STORIES
⛳️ LIV Golf is dead (according to Trump)
President Trump touched down in the Middle East Tuesday with an unexpected golf bombshell on his agenda—reportedly planning to tell Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman that LIV Golf has no viable future. According to Golfweek's Eamon Lynch, Trump will inform the Saudis that any deal with the PGA Tour must be "on the Tour's preferred terms," which won't include "a long-term future for LIV." The stunning development comes just weeks after Trump hosted a LIV event at his own course and months after facilitating high-level meetings between Tour officials and Saudi PIF representatives. ⬇️

💬 Ball rollback plan in jeopardy
PGA of America CEO Derek Sprague just declared his organization "vehemently against" the controversial golf ball rollback plan, throwing another wrench into golf's most divisive equipment debate. The USGA and R&A's proposal would reduce driving distances by 13-15 yards for pros and "5 yards or less" for average golfers beginning in 2028 and 2030 respectively. "We're really concerned about the 28 million golfers in this country," Sprague emphasized at Quail Hollow, noting recreational players have thanked him for pushing back. "I don't know one recreational golfer that wants to hit it shorter." Despite the opposition, PGA President Don Rea hinted a final decision could arrive within 6-12 months. ⬇️
Derek Sprague, PGA of America CEO, has voiced opposition to the proposed golf ball rollback plan, which aims to reduce hitting distances for professional, elite amateur, and recreational players.
“I don't know one recreational golfer that wants to hit it shorter,” Sprague said.

🧱 Mudballs impact play at PGA Championship
PGA Championship officials are facing player backlash after refusing to implement preferred lies despite Quail Hollow's mud-soaked fairways. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler uncharacteristically unloaded after a double-bogey when his perfect fairway approach unexpectedly hooked into water. "You spend your whole life trying to learn how to control a golf ball, and due to a rules decision all of a sudden you have absolutely no control," Scheffler argued. Defending champ Xander Schauffele was even more blunt, calling the situation "kind of stupid" and a "crapshoot" after his own water-bound approach. With more rain expected, Schauffele warned conditions will only worsen into "that perfect cake zone" where clean contact becomes nearly impossible. ⬇️
